Epic Games is the latest hacking victim; user credentials leaked
If you’re an avid video gamer, chances are that you have played at least one Epic Games game. They’re the developers of popular games such as Infinity Blade, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament and their founder Tim Sweeney’s classic DOS era shareware game ZZT.
Epic Games, Inc., also known as Epic and formerly Epic MegaGames, is an American video game development company based in Cary, North Carolina and has now been bought by Chinese tech giant, Tencent Holdings. They are well known for their Unreal Engine technology, which has powered their popular in-house Unreal series of first-person shooters, and the Gears of War series for the Xbox 360.
But if you visit the forum of Epic Games right now, this is what you’ll see…
The Unreal Engine-maker sent emails to members of its forums announcing that unauthorized access to usernames, email addresses, passwords and birthdates may have been accessed by unknown hackers.
Reports indicate that the only channels affected were related to Bulletstorm, Gears of War, Infinity Blade, UDK, and older Unreal Tournament titles. Therefore developers active on the Unreal Engine 4 forums shouldn’t have anything to worry about, nor should those posting about
As said above, the forums are offline while Epic Games security team is investigating the source of intrusion and the company warns to be on the lookout for any phishing attempts and adviser you to change your username and password ASAP.
