From 3½-inch Floppy disks to the new Kingston 2TB pendrive, we have come a long way in portable storage
If you are from the millennial, this won’t awe you but people belonging to older Window2 95 generation would find this shocking. We have come a long way from using those 3½-inch Floppy disks to store 1.44MB to storing a whopping 2TB on a single finger sized USB stick. Yes, Kingston today unveiled a new pendrive which can hold up to 2TB data.
The news is also important in the contemporary tech world because just a few years ago, flash drives would max out at 16GB and now flash drives with over 100GB of storage has become the new norm. Surely, the all new Kingston’s 3-inch 2TB pendrive will usher in a time when USBs will be dealing only in TBs. To put things in perspective, most budget laptops sold today have a hard disk of 1TB capacity.
World’s first 2TB USB Stick
The MicroSD card and USB pendrive manufacturer, Kingston to at CES 2017 unveiled its 2TB DataTraveler Ultimate GT flash drive. The USB flash drive, as the name suggests, offers 2TB of storage space, which is accompanied USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) performance. Which essentially means, that the 2TB DataTraveler Ultimate GT flash drive store up to 70 hours of 4K video, 96 average-sized PC games, 256000 24-megapixel images, 166 HD movies and 531,344 MP3 songs. Theoretically, the flash drive offers a transfer speed of a whopping 5Gbps.
The Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate GT is built out of a zinc-alloy metal casing for shock resistance, and features a similar (but sleeker) design to the DataTraveler HyperX Predator 512GB and 1TB flash drives introduced in 2013. It is compact with dimensions of 72mm x 26.94mm x 21mm. Kingston says that it will start shipping DataTraveler Ultimate GT in February and will be available in 1TB and 2TB capacities. Kingston has refused to reveal the pricing for DataTraveler but rest assured it will be pretty expensive considering the fact that each DataTraveler will be backed by 5-year warranty and free technical support.
